Popcorn, Eggs, and a Banana

The McStay case has been interesting to me since I first came across it on the internet about a year ago, and I can't seem to wonder about a few things. If you're not familiar with the McStay's, please read the following story about it.
On February 4, 2010 Summer McStay, after searching on the internet for a homeopathic drug, made a cell phone call at 2:11 p.m. to a homeopathic medicine company. She was looking to purchase a medication called  'Anger'. No such medicine exists. There is however, many types of homeopathic medicines that help with anger. This would be the last phone call she would make.
At 7:47 that same night, a neighbor catches on surveillance tape, what appears to be the McStay's White Isuzu Trooper passing by.
At 8:28 PM on February 4, 2010 Joseph McStay made a cell phone call  to an employee, Charles Merritt, to follow up on a meeting earlier that day. This to, would be the last  phone call he would make.
Sometime after February  4, Just north of San Diego in a small town called Fallbrook, neighbors of the McStay's, became concerned about the McStay's dogs, Bear and Digger, next door barking continuously. The neighbor called animal control officers, who gave the dogs water from a spigot. No one was home so the neighbors fed the dogs until Joseph McStay's brother came to collect the animals.
On February 10, Dan Kavanaugh , who ran Earth Inspired Products, Joseph McStay's business website, had been unable to contact Joseph so he called the police to do what is called a 'welfare check'. Not seeing anything out of the ordinary, other then no one being home, The San Diego Sherriff's leave. A few days later , Michael McStay, having become increasingly worried, breaks in through a window to find the house empty. There was some mess in the house, but Michael believed it was from remodeling that was going on in the home. On February 15, Michael calls  the police and reports the family missing. Detective Troy DuGal is sent to the Fallbrook home.DuGal  comes to the conclusion that there are no signs of a struggle but that the family appears to have left in somewhat of a hurry. Besides the two dogs being left unattended, two bowls of uneaten popcorn are in the living room and there are some eggs and a banana still on the kitchen counter. The family had vanished. Joseph, Summer and there two children, Gianni, 5, and Joseph Mateo,3.
Dugal drew his attention to the family vehicles. There green truck was still parked in the driveway but there White Isuzu Trooper was missing. The detective immediately tracked it down. It had been towed on February 8,it was originally found a couple blocks away from the U.S. Mexico border,  in a  town called   San Ysidro. The vehicle was parked illegally in a strip mall parking lot. The only fingerprints found in the car are those of the McStay family.
The area where the vehicle was found

On the same day the Isuzu was found, border surveillance captures what appears to be the McStay family crossing the border on foot while border officials are huddled in conversation. It is never clearly certain that these four individuals are the McStay's, or another family of four, because a positive ID couldn't be proven. As if the disappearance wasn't strange enough, a few other facts are discovered. A few days  before the vanishing, it was discovered that Summer had emailed someone on Craigslist about purchasing Spanish learning software and that it be delivered to Joseph at a soccer game. Friends of Joseph recalled seeing him shake hands with two unidentified men on January 29, the day of the arranged sale of the software. On January 27, Internet history shows someone was looking up passport requirements for travel to Mexico and age requirements for entering the country. Detectives also found out that while Josephs passport was up to date, Summers was expired. Government officials have stated that the family is not, or has ever been under any witness protection programs. There bank account, containing somewhere around $90,000 dollars hasn't been touched since there disappearance. Summer McStay has changed her name before, but her sister says that it is due to her eccentric personality and her dislike of her Hispanic heritage. There have been no real clues in the case in over a year. The family keeps everyone informed via there website http://www.mcstayfamily.com/ .So what do you think?
Distance Travelled
I always wondered if there was a way to find out if there were any unusual bank actions previous to the vanishing. Detectives didn't notice any large withdrawals or deposits in the weeks before they disappeared to make them think they were stockpiling money. If this was a planned departure, how long were they planning it and could they have been hiding money for quite a while. It seems that they left in a hurry, but maybe they knew that someday they would have to leave and had planned ahead. Who's to say they weren't hiding money in a Swiss bank account somewhere. As a business owner, how much was he charging his client s for his services. Is there an accounting of his funds and can it be proven he wasn't charging more then what was reported. It seems a lot of money to leave behind if they left of their own will. Also, it's a lot of money not to be touched if they were kidnapped. The four days between them leaving on Feb 4, to the border tape on Feb 8 is a lot of time to transpire. The fact that they have no money trail in those four days tells me a couple of things. They had a lot of cash on them for food, hotels, fuel, etc. They had another means of financial support and investigators should be able to track an expenditure line from Fallbrook to the border in that time. Of course this might not be possible. Was there no security cameras between the mall where the Isuzu was found and the border? Maybe a security camera elsewhere in Fallbrook where they were known to stop for gas or groceries. They may have stopped and purchased supplies if they had known they were about to 'disappear'
This case is still as mysterious as the day they vanished.

  1. Many people are suspicious of Summer. I read on a different blog that Joseph's mother claimed that the border footage looked like Summer and the two boys, but that the man with them was NOT Joseph. She could be mistaken, but she is his mother. I would buy a mother's opinion over anyone else's. So if that is not Joseph on the bridge with them, who is it? Could Summer have another man? Also, the many name changes of Summer McStay are weird, and the demeanor of Summer's sister on the Disappeared episode is also bizarre. She laughs, she almost cries, she says this whole thing "suck," but she never looks panic- or grief-stricken. For God's sake, someone could be torturing your sister in Mexico right now! Unless she knows exactly where her sister is because her sister planned this. If Joseph was the one who took possession of the Spanish-learning software, however, then it makes sense he was also planning to go to Mexico. So maybe that was him on the bridge with his family.

  2. I cant see how anyone can see anything on those surveillance tapes. I agree with you that someone knows and isn't talking and its most likely the sister. Thanks for the feedback, you've given me reason to continue with my blog. I was just about to give up on it.

  3. I think it's possible someone knows something but they aren't sure what it means - like maybe Summer was talking to her sister and made an offhand remark that didn't make sense or to another family member - it may have not been an obvious offhand remark - but I hope that the police and other investigators have interviewed the family for any clues as to anything that Summer may have said or how she was acting in the time span before they disappeared - also - I would like to know what the texts that were sent to Summer's phone said - did that provide the IR3 search and recovery any legitimate information as to what was going on with the McStay's? Dan Kavanaugh was a business associate that texted summer's cell phone more than once after they disappeared - he may have done that because Joseph's cell phone battery had died - checking out the restaurants along the roads that were travelled and any surveillance around that area - what about any buses that went along the route near there house as the McStay's were going in the direction they were headed - public buses many times have cameras - or does anyone know the last time the tank was filled with gas and how it was paid for and on what day - a gas station may also have surveillance and/or receipts for any items purchased in addition to the gas - what about the side of the border where the cars are entering - maybe the photos there have a different angle and are less grainy - was the food that was in the car that they found analyzed for forensics on the wrappers and was the restaurant called to look at surveillance for the week after and day that they disappeared? I don't think they just vanished for no good reason - I don't know what happened and there are many pieces to the puzzle but nothing fits together to give the solution to the puzzle - were there any planes in the area that had traffic pattern on video that may have caught the car on tape without realizing it? what about the cameras leaving Mexico? I think if the McStay's knew that they were going to be gone a long time they would have made arrangements for a neighbor to watch the dogs - were there any investments that Joseph McStay was against with the company that angered a client that suddenly became investments after Joseph McStay went missing - there could be clues in the office that appear to be normal every day routine but they are actually clues to what happened to them - I think the business needs to be investigated thoroughly and the ISBN numbers on the craigslist and if possible dump the phone lines for the landline if they had one to see what calls they received there - also - did they check the emails that the McStay's received? Mail? were they doing anything different in their routine such as groceries with what they bought and when and where, supplies - maybe someone does know something but they aren't aware of the importance it has to the case and didn't think it meant anything - I saw the show on I think it was the discovery channel and have checked back from time to time to see if they were found

  4. Wow this is all just to weird an entire family dropping everything and just disappearing, this is really weird. I agree with Anonymous comment Jun 23,2012 What did the texts from the husband's business associate to his wife say, it's hard to even speculate what happened to this family without all of the information, such as what the texts said, or what the business call was about when the husband called a business associate before disappearing, I also agree that the surveillance footage from EVERY business from the home to where the family SUV was found should be reviewed and that footage may shed some light on the entire situation. I am curious to find out if they were running from something, especially the wife having changed her name several times. Or were they all kidnapped? Wow this is a conundrum.. I hope they located them safely the brother seems floored by the disappearances and is extremely concerned, but as someone mentioned in a comment I read on one of the sites about the family, it seems more likely that someone involved and close to the family knows the answer to all of these questions, I would start looking toward the wife's sister because of her lackadaisical attitude towards all her sisters' name changes and the reasons "Summer" changed her name multiple times, and the disappearances in general. Her seeming disinterest leads one to believe she knows more than she is letting out..
